Josef Maria Koell
Josef Maria Köll OCist (born September 30, 1928 in Stams ; † March 1, 2008 in Meran ) was abbot of Stams Monastery from 1985 to 2003.
Life
John Köll joined in 1949 the Congregation of the Cistercians in, took the religious name of Josemaria, put on 15 August 1950 his profession from and received on 29 June 1954 Paul Rusch the priesthood . He initially worked as an educator and teacher at the boarding school and ski school in Stams. In 1967 he was appointed to a pastor's post in Sautens in the Ötztal. In 1974 he moved to Meran and was there until 1985 first as prior in Untermais , then pastor in Gratsch and St. Peter.
On August 21, 1985 he was elected as the successor to Abbot Bernhard Slovsa as the 43rd abbot of the Cistercian monastery of Stams. On September 29, 1985 he received the Benediction , colloquially "Abbot consecration ". His motto was: Ut omnes unum sint - that all are one. (Jn 17:21). He also taught religion at the Meinhardinum Stams grammar school . Prelate Köll was heavily involved in the renovation of the monastic buildings of the Stams monastery, to this end he founded, among other things, the "Association of Friends of Stams Monastery" which supported the costly maintenance of the monastery building with financial donations. He was a member of the Board of Trustees for the Preservation of the Innsbruck Court Church . In 2003 he officially took age-related retirement, but continued to celebrate masses almost every day (mostly in South Tyrol and St. Christoph); his successor was Father German Erd . Until his death he was president of the brotherhood St. Christoph am Arlberg .
Prelate Köll died in 2008 after a serious illness in the St. Anna Clinic in Merano. He is buried in the collegiate church in Stams.
