history

The name Mais comes from the Roman customs station Statio Maiensis , which existed in the 3rd century near the mouth of the Pass into the Adige .

Untermais is mentioned in a document as early as 1089/96 as "villa Mays" . It is also mentioned in 1166 as “ maize ” in the fiefdom and income register of the wealthy Bavarian Counts of Neuburg-Falkenstein , the so-called Codex Falkensteinensis . The equipment of the Stams Cistercian monastery , founded in 1273, included extensive possessions in Untermais, which were transferred to the convent by the Counts of Tyrol ; Stams has performed pastoral and pastoral functions here up to the present day.

With the rapid growth of Merano as a health resort after 1860, Untermais also grew, and numerous hotels and guesthouses were built here until the First World War . A new town hall was built in 1906.

By decree of September 24, 1923, Untermais (like Obermais and Gratsch ) was incorporated into Merano in 1924.

The poet, writer and translator Christian Morgenstern (1871–1914) lived in Untermais for several years and died here.
