Obermais ( Italian Maia Alta ) is a district of the city of Merano in South Tyrol with around 3600 inhabitants. Obermais is primarily known as the residential area of Merano, which is also characterized by numerous residences and castles.

Obermais is located in the Merano valley basin on the alluvial cone of the Naifbach on the orographic left , eastern side of the Passer . The old town of Merano is on the opposite side of the river. In the south the Winkelweg forms the border with Untermais , in the north Obermais borders on Schenna , in the east on Labers . It is 374 meters above sea level . The Obermaiser center is located around Brunnenplatz and at the beginning of Dantestrasse.

history

The name corn is derived from the Roman customs station Statio Maiensis . It existed in the 3rd century near the mouth of the Passer river into the Adige . In 1383, with “Jaeklinus dictus Dorfmaister de Superiori Mais” (Jäcklin called Dorfmeister von Obermais), a resident of the village community at that time is attested by name. By decree of September 24, 1923, Obermais (like Untermais and Gratsch ) was incorporated into Merano in 1924.

FC Obermais

The local amateur football club, which was founded in 1972, has a long tradition. He is best known for the loyal fan base (Curva Sud), which has existed since 2005. From 2000 the club recorded a steady increase in performance, which led to the fact that FC Obermais rose twice in a row and thus played in the highest regional amateur league. The team stayed there for six years before relegating them back to the national league in the 2012/13 season. The soccer field on which the club plays its home games is called Lahn .
