Coin finds suggest that the area around Schenna was already settled in Roman times. In the 14th century, Prince Ludwig von Brandenburg gave the noble Petermann von Schenna permission to build a castle on the hill of Schenna. Today Schenna Castle is one of the most famous and popular sights of Schenna.

The village belonged to the end of the First World War for the judicial district of Merano and was part of the district of Merano .
