Natz-Schabs ([ nats-ʃaps ]; Italian : Naz-Sciaves ) is an Italian municipality with 3245 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in South Tyrol near the city of Brixen .

geography

The municipality is located in the north of the Brixner valley basin, where the Wipptal , which tapers from the northwest and the Pustertal , which comes from the northeast, merge into the Eisack valley . Natz-Schabs takes up most of a plateau that is bordered by the Eisack to the west, the Rienz to the east and the foothills of the Zillertal Alps to the north . The five villages of the municipality are spread across this plateau: Aicha ( 750  m ), Natz ( 900  m ), Raas ( 800  m ), Schabs ( 800  m ) and Viums ( 900  m ).

South borders Natz to the municipality Brixen whose fraction Elvas represents the southernmost village of the plateau. In the west, the border with Vahrn runs largely along the slopes that descend from the plateau towards Neustift and Rigge , further north then in the Eisack. At Aicha, at the exit of the Wipptal, the municipality also includes part of the Franzensfester reservoir , which largely belongs to the Franzensfeste municipality . Natz-Schabs meets Mühlbach on the north side . In the east, the ravine-like lower course of the Rienz forms the border to Rodeneck and Lüsen .

history

Naz is ersturkundlich around 1110/14 as "Novts" in Traditionsbuch the Bishopric of Freising known as the Lords of Hagenau the cathedral chapter Freising local ownership as Seelgerät bequeathed. The origin of the old name Scouves (in the year 827) is still unclear. It could mean grape comb (stem of the grape) and mark the northern border of the Tyrolean wine-growing region. In earlier times, the place was not used in Schabs, but on, on or from the Schabs. Schabs formed a Malgrei of the Rodenegg court. The Malgrei (village) shop steward opposite the court was called a lawyer. From the Malgrei, the political community of Schabs was formed in the 19th century, which in 1928 under fascism was merged with Naz, Raas and Viums to form the community of Naz-Schabs.

From 1967 to 1983 the Rigel site , a NATO nuclear warhead storage facility , was located on parish grounds .
