Abbey ([ abˈtaɪ̯ ]; Ladin and Italian Badia ) is an Italian municipality in South Tyrol . Along with Corvara , Enneberg , St. Martin in Thurn and Wengen, it is one of the five predominantly Ladin-speaking communities in the Val Badia .
geography
Abbey occupies the main part of the southern, upper Gadertal (Ladin Val Badia ), which in this section is also called Abteital and is surrounded by mountain ranges of the Dolomites . The total of 82.94 km², counted as Ladinia , includes parts of the Fanes Group in the east and south , which are protected in the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park , and parts of the Puez Group in the west , which belong to the Puez-Geisler Nature Park . The most important abbey mountains include the Heiligkreuzkofel ( 2907 m slm , Sas dla Crusc ), the Piz Lavarela ( 3055 m , Piz de Lavarela ), the Piz Cunturines ( 3064 m , Piz dles Cunturines ) and the Sassongher ( 2665 m ).
The most important village settlements in the Abtei municipality, which is otherwise characterized by numerous smaller hamlets (Ladin viles ), are:
- the capital Abbey ( Badia ) in a valley widening to the north of the municipal area, consisting of the villages Pedratsches (1300- 1370 m , Pedraces ) west of Gader ( Gran Ega ) and San Leonardo (1300- 1390 m , Ladin San Linert , Italian San Leonardo ) east of the Gader,
- Stern (1390- 1520 m , Ladin La Ila ) about the center of the municipality where the Val Badia in a southwestern ( Corvara ) and a southeastern road divides, namely
- St. Kassian ( 1510–1570 m , Ladin San Ćiascian ) in the southeastern branch of the Val Badia .
Year-round accessible is the church from the north, where Abbey at Wengen ( La Val ) borders, on the valley road, which in Pustertal near Brunico begins. In a south-easterly direction, the road over the Valparola Pass ( 2192 m , Ju de Valparola ) connects the Abbey with Cortina d'Ampezzo ( Anpezo ) in the province of Belluno and Veneto .
history
The place name is explained by the extensive estates that the Benedictine Abbey Sonnenburg owned and administered here since the 12th century.
Until the end of the First World War, the abbey belonged to the judicial district of Enneberg and was part of the district of Bruneck .
On December 14, 2012, a landslide of around two hectares between St. Kassian and St. Leonhard destroyed three houses.
Attractions
Places of pilgrimage are the birthplace of St. Joseph Freinademetz and the Holy Cross Church .

The two primary schools in the neighboring communities of Wengen and Corvara are also connected to the school district.
In Stern, the only secondary schools in Val Badia are located in the high school center of the Ladin villages , which offers a language high school, a social science high school and a technical high school for economics.
