geography

The community center of Mühlbach seen from the southeast, behind it the entrance to the Valler Tal

The community of Mühlbach is located in South Tyrol at the transition from the Puster Valley to the Eisack Valley . In geographical descriptions, the municipality is accordingly sometimes assigned to one valley and sometimes to the other; However, due to its proximity to Brixen , it is assigned to the modern district community of Eisacktal . The community center, Mühlbach (750- 830  m slm ), is located on Miihlbacher reservoir in which the coming out of the Pustertal Rienz is dammed and through which the border to the south neighboring community Rodeneck runs. Behind the town center is the entrance to the Valler Valley , which stretches northwards into the subgroup of the Zillertal Alps called the Pfunderer Mountains . On a mountain terrace east to the Valler valley entrance under the Gitschberg which is located Group Meransen (1380- 1510  m ), on a mountain terrace west of the Taleingangs on the southern border to the neighboring community Natz the fraction Spinges (1090 1190  m ).

The Valler Tal, drained by the Valser Bach , together with its most important tributary valley, the Altfass valley branching off to the northeast , takes up the largest part of the Mühlbacher municipality area of a total of 84.12 km². It provides the Group Vals (1340- 1410  m ) space and is surrounded by mountain ridges, the borders with the West Wipptaler communities Fortezza and free field wear, in the northwest, the limit for Pfitscher Valley (municipality Pfitsch ) and in the east to Pfunderer Valley ( Vintl municipality ). The two highest Mühlbacher peaks rise above the valley head in the north: the Wilde Kreuzspitze ( 3135  m ) and the Wurmaulspitze ( 3022  m ).

history

The oldest mention of Mulibah can be found in a traditional Brixen note from around 1050. The German name of the place, however, compared to the pre-German names of Spinges , Vals , Meransen and Rodanc - Rodeneck , suggests that this Bavarian- German young settlement has been planted in the municipality of one of these places or the Mühlenviertel has formed one of these places. Now that the main town of Mühlbach as well as the fractions Spinges, Vals and Meransen belonged to the parish Rodeneck for centuries (until 1891), it can be assumed that Rodank-Rodeneck was the original mother community of Mühlbach. The patron saint is Helena , who is celebrated on August 15th with a traditional procession .

The Mühlbacher Klause forms the border to the Pustertal . The former valley and road block, which was used to collect customs duties, was first mentioned on January 12, 1269. The granite, coat of arms-adorned pay table ( pay stone ) was long in the old cemetery of Mühlbach. There it was placed in front of the Floriani chapel, but has since been brought back to the renovated Mühlbacher Klause.

The Mühlbach hydropower plant went into operation in 2012.

education

Mühlbach is the seat of a German school district . This includes the four primary schools in the main town of Mühlbach, Meransen, Spinges and Vals, as well as the middle school in the main town. The primary school in the neighboring municipality of Rodeneck is also connected to the school district. In Mühlbach there is also the private middle school " Herz-Jesu-Institut ".

Attractions

Freyenthurn residence
  • The Freyenthurn Manor : The massive structure characterizes the townscape. The medieval tower, built by Friedrich von Rodank between 1269 and 1277, was acquired by Georg von Enzenberg in 1578 . He and his sons built it into a representative aristocratic residence, enclosed by a wall. The residence was later expanded, including the west wing and the arcade on the upper floor. When the Mühlbach line of the Enzenberg died out, the heirs sold the residence in 1790 to the Brixen canon Hirn, who left it to the tertiary sisters to settle their order and set up a girls' school. The residence has been the monastery school of the tertiary sisters since 1856, see: Herz-Jesu-Institut (Mühlbach)
  • Another monument is the granite bridge over the Valler Bach, which Chancellor Metternich had built for the Reichsstraße in 1840.
  • church Square
    Mühlbacher Kirchplatz
The Mühlbacher Kirchplatz: The historic market square is the backdrop for many events. Pope Benedict also has family roots in Mühlbach. The historical church is closely linked to the history of the Pope.
