history
Since the late 12th century, Valler property has been documented among foreign noble families. B. 1189 with Hugo von Schöneck (Madlan), 1253 with Heinrich der Maulrapp (Zingerle) and 1288 with a woman von Banch (Tannicher). In 1263, Bishop Bruno von Brixen enfeoffed the younger son Otto of Dietmar Mayr in Niedervintl with the Mayrhof in Vals. In terms of economic history, the valley's wealth lay in its large forests and animal husbandry. This provided an opportunity for gentlemen to purchase pens from abroad, so-called Schwaighöfe . These, in turn, had to pay land rent in the results of the livestock industry, especially cheese . Among the most important landlords of Vals, the barons and counts of Wolkenstein-Rodeneck , the latter was provided with the Wolkenstein coat of arms as a seal of quality, so to speak, when it was sold.
A striking number of owners of farms in Vals came from the municipality of Natz (Rizzailler / Raspenhof, Specker / Graf in Natz, Gadner / Kaltenhauser; Grimm / Bacher in Raas, Lackner / Kofler, Thurner / Agstner, Egger i. B. / Hasler, Reiter / Brunner, Geiger / Köferer etc.), but also from Neustift (Graf / Strasser) and Mühlbach (South Tyrol) (Wieser / Atzwanger).
An important document, the Escher or Oescher letter , dates from 1450 or 1610 (original in the parish archive in Vals). In it, the field and forest regulations as well as the alpine pasture regulations were agreed between the Valler community people and the court lord Christof Freiherr von Wolkenstein, which are essentially still in force today.
Worth seeing
The parish church of St. Andrew in Vals originally dates from 1341. The tower and pointed arch windows, as well as the octagonal helmet, date from the 15th century. The interior is designed in a neo-Gothic style.
Economy and tourism
In addition to agriculture, the inhabitants mostly live from tourism (summer and winter seasons), which is also reflected in the number of hotels and restaurants. There are two ski areas in Vals, the Jochtal ski area at an altitude of 1,900–2,100 meters and its counterpart at an altitude of 1,300–1,600 meters. Since 2011/12 there has been a direct connection (2 gondolas) to the Gitschberg ski area. Furthermore, the place has an ice rink, several kilometers of cross-country ski trails and a children's ski park that is connected to the ski school.
