Pius Leitner (born June 12, 1954 in Vals , Mühlbach ) is a South Tyrolean politician and honorary chairman of the Freedom Party .

Life

Leitner worked from 1972 to 1976 as a secondary school teacher in Brixen , then from 1977 to 1992 as a customs officer in Franzensfeste . From 1989 to 1993 he was the regional commander of the South Tyrolean shooting association . In the 1993 elections, the former SVP member Leitner was able to win a mandate for the state parliament and, at the same time, the regional council of Trentino-South Tyrol for the Freedom Party founded a year earlier . From 1994 to 2013, Leitner was state party chairman, and has been honorary chairman ever since. He was re-elected in the 1998, 2003, 2008 and 2013 state elections, most recently with 36,761 preferential votes. In 2014 he stood as the top candidate for a list alliance between the Freedom Party and the Lega Nord in the European elections , but with 6,223 votes he clearly missed out on parliament. On March 13, 2017, Leitner submitted his resignation from his state parliament and regional council mandate after he had been sentenced to a conditional prison sentence in the first instance. His request was accepted by the state parliament on April 4, and Hannes Zingerle moved up for him . In September of the same year, Leitner was acquitted of the allegations against him in the second instance.
