Schöneck Castle

Schöneck Castle is a high medieval castle near Mühlen in the municipality of Pfalzen in South Tyrol ( Italy ).

location

Schöneck Castle is located north of the Puster Valley on a wide slope above Chienes .

It is privately owned and is not accessible.

history

The castle was built in the 12th century by the Lords of Rodeneck . It was first mentioned in documents in 1155 and 1164. It was provided with full jurisdiction and was initially a fief of the Brixen monastery , then owned by the Meinhardiner . Hugo von Schöneck set out for the third crusade in 1189 , on which he died; previously he bequeathed his goods in Rodeneck, Vals and Schalders to the Neustift monastery . In 1342 Engelmar von Villanders is documented as the owner of the court of Schöneck. After 1348 all possessions of the Lords of Villanders north of the Haslacher Klause fell back to the Counts of Gorizia , who let them be administered by carers .

The castle is considered to be the possible birthplace of the late medieval knight and poet composer Oswald von Wolkenstein (1376 / 77–1445). This is historically not clearly documented, but is considered the most likely variant, since Friedrich von Wolkenstein, Oswald's father, was sealed as "Captain (Pfleger) von Schöneck" in the years to come .

investment

The keep, kennel and wall have been preserved and have been restored in recent years. The remains of a fresco from Michael Pacher's workshop have been preserved in the ruins of the castle chapel .
