Hochgalsaun Castle

The castle Hochgalsaun is the ruins of a hilltop castle near the village Galsaun in the town of Bernkastel-Ciardes in Vinschgau in South Tyrol .

location

The ruin is located at the top of a rock ridge on the Sonnenberg , west of the Galsauner trench, on a steeply sloping rock spur. About 80 meters below the ruins of the castle chapel are on a rock step ("Kirchknott") on the valley side .

history

Hochgalsaun Castle was probably built by the Lords of Montalban and was first mentioned in 1262. After the castle was sold to Meinhard II , it was destroyed in 1296. In 1329 Johann, Peter and Konrad von Schlandersberg received permission from Heinrich von Kärnten to build a new castle. Due to its extreme location, however, it was increasingly used less and then destroyed after a long siege in 1418, 1423 or 1432 by Frederick IV . After that the ruin was not rebuilt and fell into disrepair. In 1771 the ruins fell to Count Hendl . The castle ruins have been in changing private ownership since 1864.
