The Michelsburg (also St. Michelsburg , St. Michaelsburg or Michlsburg ) is one of the oldest castles in the South Tyrolean Puster Valley and in the entire historical region of Tyrol . The hilltop castle is located on a ledge near the village of Moos in the municipality of St. Lorenzen .

history

It has not been proven whether the core castle was laid out in the late 11th century as the former seat of the counts in the Pustertal; sometimes the year 1091 is mentioned as the date of construction. The first mentions of the castle in 1205 and 1209 indicate that it was founded by the Counts of Andechs , before they lost the complex in favor of the Counts of Tyrol due to their political ban . From the 15th century, judges from the regional court of the same name held office here . In the 16th century the castle have been substantially extended, a second "dominant tower" added and a bailey with roundels added.

From 1874 to 1955 the Michelsburg belonged to the Künigl family with a short break . It is still privately owned today.

description

The partially dilapidated two-tower inner castle had a tower with a battlement , several flat bay extensions and a circular wall with key notches and square battlements . In 1950 the main castle was placed under monument protection. The outer bailey with the remains of the outer castle gate still shows the ruins of a farm building and a corner tower in the south.
