Katzenstein Castle

The castle Katzenstein locally, Castle Katzenstein called, is a hillside castle at about 490  m slm in Meran in South Tyrol . It is located on the slopes of the Tschögglberg, which slopes down to the Adige Valley, in the Freiberg area, a little below the Fragsburg .

history

The castle complex was mentioned as early as 1258 with a Conrad von Katzenstein as the ancestral seat of the Lords von Katzenstein and in 1285 Conrad was mentioned as the owner of the farm on the stone . In 1347 the brothers Diepold and Rudolf von Katzenstein jointly owned the castle. In 1355 Diepold was councilor of Margrave Ludwig von Brandenburg , the husband of Margarethe Maultasch , and in 1357 district judge of Gries ; In 1361 Diepold and Rudolf von Katzenstein are important personalities at Meinhard III's side. After the male line of the Katzenstein family had died out in 1450, numerous feudal bearers appeared at the castle.

After Michael Katzböck held the castle as a pledge , he had it largely rebuilt in 1580; the castle was then his free property. In the 17th century, the castle passed to the Pögel when Susanna Maria Katzböck von Katzenstein married Hans Pögel von Thurnstein . In 1774 Baron Johann Josef von Priami bought the castle. In 1811 the castle came into rural possession. Around 1860 the entire property was acquired by Lieutenant Franz Huber, who had extensive renovation work carried out on the buildings. In 1938 Josef Menz bought the castle, whose family still lives there today.

description

The castle is in a naturally almost completely unsecured location. In addition to the low quadrangular keep a multi-converted extend Palas as a housing, a chapel with a groin vault and a kennel .
