The Untermatsch castle ruin is a hilltop castle in Matsch (municipality of Mals ) in South Tyrol that has been preserved in the remains of the wall .
geography
The ruin is located on the southern part of the ridge of a terminal moraine around which the Saldurbach flows. 80 meters higher and 130 meters away is the Obermatsch castle ruin , with which it forms a group of castles and to which it was secured in the north by a ditch .
history
The castles Ober- and Untermatsch were probably built in the 12./13. It was built and inhabited in the 13th century by the bailiffs von Mud . In 1297 Egino IV and Ulrich II shared their property after a long dispute. Untermatsch probably represented the younger building, as it is mentioned for the first time from now on. In 1309 Ulrich II was slain in a dispute by his cousin Egino IV because he is said to have molested his wife. In 1351 the bailiffs of Matsch accepted Untermatsch as a sovereign fiefdom. In 1358 Ulrich III attacked . the Obermatsch Castle from Untermatsch, destroyed it and exterminated this older line of the family with his cousins Hartwig and Johann. In 1537 Untermatsch Castle came to the family of Count Trapp von Matsch , who still own it today.
Due to the difficult geographical location for living, the castle was probably abandoned early.
Status
Only a few remains of the wall of a tower-like building and an extension with two windows have survived.
