Wolkenstein Castle

The Selva Castle is a medieval castle ruin in Selva di Val Gardena , in South Tyrol , Italy .

location

The ruin is located at the confluence of the Langental in the Val Gardena over 1600 meters high in the rock face of the Stevia and thus in the Puez group of the Dolomites . The small castle was in the custody of the transition on the Gardena Pass into Val Badia an important strategic function.

history

The castle is the ancestral seat of the Tyrolean aristocratic family Wolkenstein-Trostburg - a side line of the Lords of Villanders - who own the ruins to this day. The castle dates back to the 13th century and was owned by Heinrich von Kastelruth around 1240. In 1293 it was acquired by Randolt von Villanders, an ancestor of the later Selva family, together with the Wolkenstein court. When an inheritance was divided in 1407, it fell to Michael von Wolkenstein († 1443), the older brother of the late medieval poet composer Oswald von Wolkenstein . The castle was stormed by the Venetians at the end of the 15th century , initially rebuilt in 1525, then served as the seat of the court and finally fell into disrepair. Only the valley wall facing south and the forecourt are preserved.

investment

The castle was originally built as a variant of a cave castle directly on the rock face and obviously had a triangular floor plan. It is located under a rock overhang, which also served as the roof of the castle.
