Thurnstein Castle is located in Dorf Tirol near Merano in South Tyrol .

On the northern edge of the Merano valley basin, it is on the slopes of the Mutspitze , west of Schloss Tirol , at the crossroads of the paths leading from Algund and Gratsch to Tirol.

The castle was first mentioned in 1276 as Thurm Platzleid . 1282 the eunuch Konrad Milser from Graf was Meinhard II. Of Tyrol with the castle invested . The name Thurnstein first appeared in 1478 . The south wing was added to the tower in the 16th century and the north wing in the 18th century. In the following years the hay barn, Katzpöck, von Planta , Eyrl, Rottenpuecher and Wittenbach had the castle as a fief. At the turn of the 17th century it came into the possession of the Merano family of Alexander von Egen, whose descendants have been running it as a restaurant since the First World War.
