The Straßberg castle ruins are located in the South Tyrolean part of the Wipp Valley in Italy . The closest town is Ried , a fraction of Sterzing , whose city center is a few kilometers south. The hilltop castle occupies a narrow, barely protected hill on the east side of the valley, where it guarded the old road over the Brenner Pass .
history
The castle was - this is suggested by historical and building analysis criteria - probably built between 1263 and 1280, the year it was first mentioned as Strazperch . In the first years of its existence, the complex was a fiefdom of the bishops of Brixen and as such came into Tyrolean possession. The sovereigns again handed the building over to various families, including the Freundsberg and the Fugger . Straßberg served as the seat of the court until the 16th century, after which it lost its importance. In 1939/40, parts of the castle complex were tunneled under and used as barrage No. 19 of the Alpine Wall . In 1971 the preserved parts of the castle were restored, and in 1986 they were placed under protection as a monument.
The gate tower , the keep and sections of the curtain wall are in a good state of preservation . Parts of the castle are used by a farm.
