The Treuenstein castle ruins (also called Troyenstein ) are the remains of a castle built in the 13th century . It rises on the northeast edge of the city of Bolzano , in the Gries district , directly on the Fagenbach or on the main road to Jenesien .

Only the very slim, high round tower, the so-called Gscheibte Tower , which was documented in 1497 in a water protection ordinance of King Maximilian I as “zum Scheyblingen thurn” , is completely preserved. The round tower with an inner diameter of only about three meters is crowned by dovetail pinnacles and was not habitable in the long term. The arched high entrance is about eight meters high. Otherwise, only the castle chapel, consecrated to St. Oswald, and the remains of the former curtain wall have been preserved from the original complex. The castle was built by the Lords of Treuenstein , who are first mentioned in a document in 1231. In 1565 Troyer-Gießbach gave Cyriak Castle as a fief . The residence in neo-Gothic Tudor style , located a little below the keep, is a reconstruction of an old farmstead belonging to the complex that was made in 1862 according to plans by Sebastian Altmann .

A hermitage founded by Bozen's Hilarion Maier has been located above Treuenstein since around 1700 ; Destroyed by fire in 1706, Franz Anton Count Trojer had it rebuilt and in the same year a church in honor of the Holy Cross and Maria Magdalena was consecrated by the Bishop of Trent. After its secularization in 1788, the complex gradually fell into disrepair , so that today only remains of the wall testify to it.
