Reichenberg Castle (South Tyrol)

Keep of the Reichenberg castle ruins

The castle ruin Reichenberg (also called castle ) is located on a steep mountain slope above the village of Taufers in the Münstertal in South Tyrol ( Italy ). It is located at about 1340  m slm height and thus about 150 meters lower than the ruins of Rotund ( Oberreichenberg ), which is why the alternative name Unterreichenberg is common.

The original system was around 100 meters in length in its north-south axis and around 50 meters in the west-east axis. Today, in addition to some ruined parts of the wall, only the mighty, 23-meter-high, five-storey keep is preserved. This was extensively restored at the end of the last millennium. However, the construction work can hardly be seen from the outside, only the new, necessary access to the high entrance at a height of about ten meters can be seen on closer inspection.

The ruin is freely accessible, but there is a risk of collapse.

history

Reichenberg was built in the 12th century - like Rotund Castle in the 10th century - by the bishops of Chur and used as a residence. In 1150 the castle went to the Lords of Reichenberg as a fief . In 1373 the system was sold and came to the governors of Matsch. These died out in 1504 and the barons von Trapp inherited the castle. From 1559 until the 19th century, Reichenberg was owned by the Counts of Hendl . The facility has been uninhabited since 1680.
