Rundegg

Rundegg Castle , also known as Castel Rundegg, in the Obermais district of Merano , was built around 1600 around a four-cornered medieval residential tower from the 14th century. In the 17th century, Rundegg was converted from a simple country estate into a patrician house. The mighty square tower is covered by a hipped roof. The complex has a round arched gate, oriel turrets, an inner courtyard and a courtyard wall with a crenellated wreath.

The complex was acquired by Jakob von Mohr in 1621 and made a residence in 1625 (tax exemption).

A former lady of the Rundegg castle, Anna von Paravicini, went down in the history of Merano. At the age of 18, she became the fourth wife of the then 82-year-old lord of the castle Bernardin von Paravicini († 1770 at the age of 104) and is said to have given birth to her husband, who was married for 22 years, with seven children. The people of Merano ascribe this “biological miracle” to the local climate.

A South Tyrolean Nörggele legend is also associated with the castle.

The castle can be reached in five minutes from Brunnenplatz in Merano. In 1978 it was converted into a luxury hotel with the first “ beauty farm ” in Italy.
