history

Welsperg Castle was commissioned and named after the brothers Schwikher and Otto von Welsperg. They had the unusually tall and slim-looking keep built between 1126 and 1140. The Palas followed soon after with farm buildings and a Romanesque chapel.

The Welsperg became subordinates of the Counts of Gorizia and Tyrol. They increased their wealth and importance through clever marriage policies and skillful trade, mining and administrative activities. In 1359 Georg von Welsperg bought the Thurn Castle opposite. In the late 15th and early 16th centuries, Welsperg Castle was considerably expanded and expanded. The family experienced the peak of their power development with Baron Guidobold von Welsperg and Primör, who became the emperor's chamberlain and advisor. Leopold I granted him the rank of count in 1662.

In 1765, a fire destroyed most of the castle complex, including parts of the palace and the farm building. As a result, the roof structure of the palace was lowered to its present height and the facility was renovated. However, the castle lost its importance and was no longer inhabited. The castle has been owned by the Counts of Thun and Hohenstein since around 1900 ; Under the supervision of the Welsperg Castle Board of Trustees, numerous concerts, exhibitions and festivals are organized in the castle walls in summer.
