The Obermatsch castle ruin is a hilltop castle in Matsch (municipality of Mals ) in South Tyrol that has been preserved in the remains of the wall .

geography

The ruin is located on the northern part of the ridge of a terminal moraine around which the Saldurbach flows. 80 meters below and 130 meters away is the Untermatsch castle ruins , with which they form a group of castles.

history

The castles Ober- and Untermatsch were probably built and inhabited in the 12th century by the bailiffs von Matsch . In 1297 the castles were divided between Egino IV and Ulrich II as part of a family division, with Egino IV receiving the upper castle. Obermatsch probably represented the older building, as the lower castle is mentioned for the first time from this point in time. In 1309 Egino IV finally killed his cousin Ulrich II because he is said to have molested his wife. In 1358 Ulrich III attacked . Obermatsch Castle, destroyed it and exterminated this older line of the family with his cousins Hartwig and Johann. In 1537 Obermatsch Castle passed to the family of Count Trapp von Matsch , who still own it today.

Due to the difficult geographical location for living, the castle was probably abandoned early.

Status

Only a few remains of the wall of the keep and of residential buildings have survived. In addition, there is a Romanesque castle chapel from the late 12th century , consecrated to St. Martin , on Obermatsch's castle square .
