As Tinzlturm (also tower at the Tinzlleiten or Dinzlleiten called) remains are of a building in St. Jakob in the South Tyrolean municipality Laives referred. The original name and history of the tower stump overgrown by vegetation are unknown.

Building

The remains of the Tinzlturms located next to an old crossing of two defunct ways: the old road from Laives to Bolzano along the mountainside and now completely overgrown walkway of St. Jacob up to the mountain hamlet since . The ruin, which is slightly elevated above the valley floor, has a square floor plan. The up to 1.6 m thick walls are about 8.5 m long. The brickwork still rises about 3 m high on the valley side and sits on a protruding porphyry rock head . The entrance appears to have been in an elevated position.

Research history

A first brief description of the building comes from Peter Eisensteck, who published an article on “lost castles” in the Bozen area in the monthly magazine for South Tyrolean regional studies “ Der Schlern ” in 1929 . In it he described the location and dimensions of the scrub-overgrown tower stump that he had discovered on a hunting excursion. Josef Weingartner , to whom Eisensteck sent photographs, dated the masonry to the 12th or 13th century.

In 1978 the building stock was placed under monument protection.

In 1983 Georg Tengler and Josef Nössing carried out a thorough survey of the ruin, the "secret of which has unfortunately not been revealed to this day", and had the floor plan and views drawn up , which were published in 1998 in a local history book on the town of Laives. Tengler noted in his contribution that an interpretation of the walls as an old watchtower could be assumed, which should be seen in connection with the old crossroads.

Thomas Bitterli-Waldvogel recorded the Tinzl tower in his South Tyrolean castle map , published in 1995, with the note that there was “no documented information about names and history”. However , the building was not mentioned in the multi-volume Tyrolean Castle Book .
