Weingartner finished his theology studies in Bressanone in 1907 and, after being ordained priest there, studied art history with Max Dvořák at the University of Vienna . From 1911 to 1915 he was secretary of the monuments office in Innsbruck and from 1915 to 1918 he headed its branch in Bolzano . During his life, Weingartner carried out basic research on art history in Tyrol , especially in South Tyrol . His book “Kunstdenkmäler Südtirols” , published in eight editions, is still considered a milestone and exemplary example of a regional art topography based on the model of the “ Handbook of German Art Monuments ” founded by Georg Dehio . He also laid the foundations for modern castle research in the Tyrolean region.

Numerous streets in South, North and East Tyrol are named after Josef Weingartner.

Josef Weingartner was the great uncle of the Tyrolean governor and politician Wendelin Weingartner .
