Karneid Castle

Karneid Castle , located a little to the east of Bolzano , was built on a steep rocky hill, seemingly impregnable from two sides, and is about 420 meters above sea level. According to an old tradition (Weingartner), it should originally have belonged to the Lords of Greifenstein , who also owned the nearby Haselburg in 1289 . The castle, built around the middle of the 13th century and mentioned in 1297 as “castrum de Curniet” or “gschloss Curneidt” , is mentioned in a document in 1370 as the property of the Lords of Völs , who extended their sphere of influence from Prösels via Steinegg to Bozen. In 1387 the lords of Lichtenstein are enfeoffed with the castles and courts of Karneid and Steinegg. The later Counts of Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn were able to hold this property until it died out in 1764.

Current condition

The system consists essentially of the keep , Palas , Tower House , circular wall with dovetail battlements and chapel , which is dedicated to Santa Anna and having valuable Roman fresco. In the 14th century a kennel was added, in the 16th century today's entrance, gate towers and some buildings inside.

history

In 1838, Anton von Goldegg zu Lindenburg bought the castle, which had been in ruins since the late 18th century, and began restoring it. In 1884 the castle was acquired by the director of the Royal Bavarian Art Academy in Munich, Ferdinand Freiherr von Miller . His daughter Renata was married to Major General Karl Ferdinand von Malaisé (1868–1946). In 1954 their son Ferdinand Eugen von Malaisé took over the castle and it is still owned by his descendants. In the last few years the municipality of Karneid has carried out further renovation measures on the castle. The basis is an agreement between the local government and the Malaisé family, according to which the castle will be made available for some public events (concerts, author readings, receptions, etc.) in return for various restoration measures.
