Brandis castle ruins

The Brandis castle ruins are the ruins of a hilltop castle above Niederlana, a district of the market town of Lana in South Tyrol , and was once the ancestral seat of the Counts of Brandis .

history

According to tradition, the beginnings of the castle go back to the 6th century. To 1179 Advanced Heinrich Brandis he the existing castle is a castle keep . According to a document, in 1236 Pranthoch Brandis received the sole right to use the castle from his brothers and built a new defensive tower. The Chapel of the Holy Helpers , built around 1500, was not completed until the beginning of the 17th century.

One night in 1807, parts of the dilapidated keep collapsed on the residential building. The wife of the manager at the time, Anna von Rutter , died in the incident . A rich collection of weapons was also spilled. During research in the 1980s, remains of armaments were discovered in the ruins.

As a result of the event, Johann Graf von Brandis decided to build Neubrandis Castle below the castle complex on a nearby hill . Since then the ruins have been left to decay.

investment

The ruin consists of three parts: the barn and outbuildings, the Palas with castle entrance, and the highest on the part of the Burg Square freestanding, partly collapsed keep.
