Rodenegg Castle (South Tyrol)
Rodenegg Castle

Rodenegg Castle is located northeast of Brixen in the Rodeneck municipality in South Tyrol .

The castle is clearly visible from the Pustertaler Straße between Schabs and Mühlbach, stretched out on a narrow rock nose that slopes steeply on three sides to the Rienz Gorge .

It was built in the first half of the 12th century by Frederick I of Rodank and was probably originally only residential tower and Palas . The lords of Rodank were an important family of ministers who owned the castle until it died out around 1300. After that, it was under sovereign administration for almost 200 years before it passed to the barons (and later counts) of Wolkenstein-Rodenegg in 1491 , who enlarged the complex in the 16th century and expanded it to resemble a castle. The founder of the Wolkenstein-Rodenegg line was Oswald von Wolkenstein ; his descendants still own the castle today.

Fresco from the Iwein cycle at Rodenegg Castle
Rodenegg Castle

Rodenegg Castle is in good condition today; a part is even still inhabited. Inside there is a museum and original furniture from the late Renaissance period. The main attraction is the cycle of frescoes on the Iwein epic by Hartmann von Aue , which was discovered in 1972 and then uncovered, and is considered the oldest secular wall painting in the German-speaking world (created between 1200 and 1230).

Also worth seeing are the St. Michael Castle Chapel , the armory, the bakery, the dungeon, the palace garden and the so-called Lauterfresserloch, a narrow dungeon in which Mathias Perger, the legendary Lauterfresser (because of his preference for "Lauteres" = soups ), was held captive. In 1645 a sensational trial was carried out against him at Rodenegg Castle, in which he was sentenced to death at the stake for witchcraft .

For the wall paintings see main article Iwein .
