Volker Schupp (2015)

Volker Schupp (born February 12, 1934 in Karlsruhe ) is a German German philologist and university professor . He is known for his broad-based research on German literature and language from its origins to modern times. Between 1983 and 1987 he was rector of the University of Freiburg . In 2002 he retired.

Life and accomplishments

From 1954 to 1961, Volker Schupp studied German, Latin, French, history and philosophy at the Universities of Freiburg im Breisgau , Munich and the Sorbonne (Paris) . In 1962 he did his doctorate in Freiburg under Friedrich Maurer and passed the state examination in German, French and Latin. Until 1963 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Historical Regional Studies, and until 1969 Friedrich Maurer's research assistant at the German Seminar. He received a habilitation grant from the DFG and qualified as a professor in Germanic Philology in 1971.

In May 1971 he became full professor for older German studies at the Ruhr University in Bochum . In 1975/76 he was Dean of the Department of Philology there. From April 1, 1978 on, he held the chair for Germanic Philology in Freiburg. In 1982/83 he was dean of the Philological Faculty III and spokesman for the Joint Committee of the Philological Faculties.

From 1983 to 1987 he was rector of the University of Freiburg, and from 1986 to 1988 chairman of the state rectors' conference of Baden-Württemberg . He retired in 2002, but is still active as a university professor and researcher.

In 2000 he advocated the purchase of the Donaueschingen Nibelung Manuscript C by the Badische Landesbibliothek .

He is a member of the Scientific Council of the Brothers Grimm Society .

Volker Schupp has been with Renate Schupp, born in 1963. Judge, married. Their marriage had three children, two sons and a daughter.
