Rüdiger Schnell

Rüdiger Schnell (born September 7, 1942 in Berlin ) is a German philologist and literary scholar .

From 1962 to 1968, Rüdiger Schnell studied German, Latin and philosophy at the Universities of Tübingen and Basel . In 1967 he received his doctorate in Basel with a thesis on Rudolf von Ems . From 1968 to 1971 Schnell was a high school teacher at the Wilhelm-Gymnasium Stuttgart. He then taught from 1971 to 1982 as a lecturer at the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen . His habilitation took place in Basel in 1979. From 1982 to 1988 Schnell taught as professor of German language history and medieval literature at the TU Braunschweig and from 1988 to 2008 he was full professor of German philology at the University of Basel.

His main research interests include the theory of text types or genres, court culture, gender studies, the history of sexuality, love and marriage, historical emotion research as well as linguistic geography and historical semantics.
