Anton Franz Altmutter (born September 4, 1745 in Vienna , † January 21, 1817 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian painter.

Life

Franz Alt Mutter first learned from the painter Bande and then attended the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Caspar Franz Sambach , Jakob Christoph Schletterer and Jacob Matthias Schmutzer . He then traveled to Bavaria and Bohemia , eventually settling in Hungary for many years . Altmutter came to Innsbruck via Graz in 1771, which became his final home. In 1780 his son Jakob Placidus was born , who also became a painter.

Franz Altmutter was a very versatile and productive artist, whose works in the late baroque tradition of Paul Troger were of particular importance for Tyrol. He created oil paintings , watercolors and pastels , as well as frescoes . His subjects range from portraits to history painting, from religious and mythological images to still lifes ; But above all his frescoes are important for Tyrolean churches. He achieved notoriety and popularity with the so-called old mother's room in the Innsbruck Hofburg , where he sometimes depicted scenes from Tyrolean folk life based on his son's models. Altmother also worked as a set designer and wallpaper painter.
