Jacob Matthias Schmutzer (* 3 / 5. April 1733 in Vienna , † 2. December 1811 ) was an Austrian engraver and painter .

Life

Schmutzer trained as a copperplate engraver in Vienna and Paris under Johann Georg Wille . In 1766 he returned to Vienna, where he received permission from Empress Maria Theresa to found a copper engraving academy, of which he became director. He trained numerous students there, including Carl Conti , Johann Jacobé , Kilian Ponheimer (father) , Johann Peter Pichler and Kilian Ponheimer (son) . Schmutzer established the fame of Viennese reproduction graphics .

In 1912 in Vienna Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus (15th district) Schmutzergasse was named after him and three of his ancestors.

In 1769 Schmutzer was a Adjustierungs -Kupferstichserie out what the cavalry at the time of Maria Theresa reproduces faithfully ( hussars , dragoons , cuirassiers and Chevauleger ). The series was subsequently painted in oil on wood by Johann Christian Brand and is now on display in the Army History Museum in Vienna.
