Rudy Dhaenens

Rudy Dhaenens (born April 10, 1961 in Deinze , † April 6, 1998 in Aalst ) was a Belgian cyclist.

Rudy Dhaenens celebrated a surprising success when he won the road world championship in Japan in 1990. In the same year he was also awarded second place in the Cycling World Cup and Belgium's athlete of the year .

After a few minor successes, Dhaenens' career ended in 1992 due to heart problems. In 1998 he had a fatal accident in his car on the way to the finish of the Tour of Flanders in Ninove -Meerbek, where he was to accompany the race as a co-commentator for the television station Eurosport . The GP Rudy Dhaenens was named in his honor .
