Marino Basso

Marino Basso (born June 1, 1945 in Rettorgole di Caldogno ) is a former Italian professional cyclist .

Basso was a sprint specialist and began his professional career in 1966 by winning the eighth stage of the Giro. As early as 1967 he won two stages in the Tour de France and fought to win the green jersey for the driver with the best points. By 1978 he had a total of 80 victories as a professional driver, including the title of professional world champion in road racing in 1972. In the same year he was also Italian champion when he drove for Felice Gimondi in the Salvarani team . He won seven stages in the Tour de France , twelve in the Giro d'Italia and six in the Vuelta a España .

In the last year of his sporting career, he won two road races and retired from active racing in 1978 at the age of 33. Then Marino Basso built up the company " Cicli Basso " with his brothers Renato and Alcide , which manufactures bicycle frames . Since the late 1990s, Marino Basso was team leader of the Italian team Amica-Chips .

He is not related to the Italian cyclist Ivan Basso .

Cicli Basso

In 1981 the three Basso brothers founded the bicycle manufacturer Cicli Basso , which still exists today and produces bicycle frames. The company is based in Dueville in the province of Vicenza in Veneto. Renato Basso is the managing director and Alcide Basso, who learned the craft of frame construction, is responsible for the technical areas. A frame model from the 1990s was named after the venue Gap, where Marino Basso became world champion in 1972.
