The 61st Tour de France took place from June 27 to July 21, 1974 and ran over 4098 km on 22 stages. While Luis Ocaña Pernía and Joop Zoetemelk did not start, Eddy Merckx , who had suspended last year , was the big favorite. For the first time a stage of the Tour de France took place in Great Britain. 130 racers took part in the tour, of which 105 were classified.
Race course
Merckx prevailed at the prologue in Brest , but initially gave up the yellow jersey after a day.
The Frenchman Raymond Poulidor won the stage to Pla d'Adet at the age of 38 after a solo escape and finished second in the overall standings, just ahead of the Spaniard Vicente Lopez-Carril , who had also won a stage. It was only during the last time trial, the penultimate stage, that Poulidor, who was two minutes behind Lopez-Carril, pushed past the Spaniard by one second.
On the last stage, which ended for the last time in 1974 at the Velodrome La Cipale in Paris, Merckx was able to prevail in the sprint after surprisingly not winning the time trial the day before.
Patrick Sercu , who had won three stages and wore the yellow jersey for one day, won the green jersey , Domingo Perurena from Spain prevailed against Eddy Merckx in the mountain classification.
In his fifth participation, Merckx won the Tour de France for the fifth time, winning eight stages. Nevertheless, Merckx's victory was not as confident as in his first Tour victories: In the Pyrenees and in the last time trial, the Belgian showed unexpected weaknesses that did not endanger his victory.
