The 47th Tour de France took place from June 26 to July 17, 1960 and ran over 4173 kilometers over 21 stages. Jacques Anquetil only started in the Giro d'Italia in 1960 , so the Frenchman Roger Rivière started the race as the favorite. 128 racing drivers took part, 81 of which were classified.
Race course
Rivière won the first individual time trial on the second stage, but the Italian Gastone Nencini took over the yellow jersey after finishing second in the time trial . Nencini could only wear the jersey for two days at first; then Joseph Groussard took over , followed by Henry Anglade from France , who was second in the previous year . Also in January Adriaensens could take the lead for a few days before the driver the Pyrenees reached.
On the tenth stage, Nencini took over the yellow jersey again, Rivière was only half a minute behind the Italian after his stage win in Pau . The Italian was able to increase his lead on the next stage, but Rivière was still within reach. On the 14th stage from Millau to Avignon , the Frenchman fell into a ravine on the descent from Col du Perjuret and injured himself so badly that he had to end his cycling career.
Nencini was able to win the Tour de France with a record average of 37.210 km / h in front of his compatriot Graziano Battistini , Adriaensens took third place. Jean Graczyk from France also secured the green jersey after four stage victories , the Italian Imerio Massignan won the mountain classification .
For the first time since the Second World War there was a German national team, since 1958 German drivers had been on the road in a German-Swiss team. As the best German, Hennes Junkermann missed third place in the overall standings by just under a minute.
