Route map of the Tour de France 1936

The 30th Tour de France took place from July 7th to August 2nd, 1936 and comprised 21 stages. The 90 participants covered 4438 km, 43 of them were classified. The Italian team stayed away from the tour for political reasons.

Race course

It was tight on the first stages, the yellow jersey of the front runner changed the wearer several times. After the eighth stage, Belgian Sylvère Maes took over and defended it as far as Paris. He took over nine minutes from his closest rival, the French Antonin Magne , on the 16th stage from Luchon to Pau and thus laid the foundation for his victory.

In the battle for second place overall, Magne, who had won the Tour in 1931 , beat Belgian Félicien Vervaecke . But he benefited from the fact that Vervaecke used an illegal bike with a gear shift on the 16th stage and also had his wife catered for at the top of the Col d'Aubisque . For this, the Belgian received a time penalty of 11 minutes. Without this penalty, Vervaecke, who was less than a minute behind Magne at the finish in Paris, would have finished second.

The French sprinter René Le Grevès was successful in the flat, winning six stages. The best team was Belgium, the Spaniard Julian Berrendero secured the mountain classification.

The German team, which started with ten drivers, did not reach the goal. The last German driver gave up on the 15th stage. Even from the Austrian team, which started with only four participants, none of them reached the finish line in Paris.

At the Tour de France 1936 there was again an increase in the average speed of the winner, it was 31.108 km / h.

During the tour, the tour director Henri Desgrange fell ill after two stages, his deputy, Jacques Goddet , initially took over his post temporarily. The next year Desgrange officially assigned him the race direction of the Tour de France.
