Arsène Mersch

Arsène Mersch (born December 14, 1913 in Koerich ; † July 12, 1980 ibid) was a Luxembourg cyclist.

Athletic career

In 1931 he acquired his first license as a cyclist with the VC Dommeldange club. He remained a member of the club throughout his career. In 1935 and 1938 Mersch was Luxembourgish champion in road racing and in 1936, 1938 and 1939 in cyclo-cross racing . At the Tour de France 1936 he rode in the yellow jersey for one day, in the end he finished fifth. In 1938 and 1939 he won a stage of the Tour de Suisse , and in 1938 he was second overall.

Professional

After his sporting career, he took over his uncle's sawmill near Koerich in 1940.

Honors

In his hometown Koerich , Mersch is commemorated with the Rue Arsène Mersch and a memorial stone.
