Jean-Pierre Schmitz
Jean-Pierre Schmitz , called Jempy Schmitz (born February 15, 1932 in Huldingen ; † November 14, 2017 ) was a Luxembourg cyclist .
Athletic career
Jean-Pierre Schmitz was Luxembourg champion in 1952 in the street race of amateurs ; In 1953 he took second place in the overall ranking of the Tour of Austria behind his compatriot Francis Gehlhausen . In addition, he was "Großglocknerkönig", ie he was the first to cross the Großglockner on the stage. In 1954 he joined the professionals . In the same year he finished second in the overall ranking of the Critérium du Dauphiné , was third in the Luxembourg road championship and won the Tour of Luxembourg .

In 1957 he won the Grand Prix Midi Libre , the following year he was two-time Luxembourgish champion in road racing and in the individual time trial and won the Tour of Luxembourg a second time. In 1959 and 1960 he was second in the Luxembourg road racing championship.
Jean-Pierre Schmitz started five times in the Tour de France . In 1956 he won a stage and was 36th overall, in 1958 he finished 37th. At the Giro d'Italia , he was not at the start in his career, the Vuelta a España he drove in 1960, but was eliminated.
Honors
The “Randonnée Jempy Schmitz” race for everyone has been held annually since 1993 in Schmitz's hometown of Huldange .
