Benoît Joachim (born January 14, 1976 in Foetz ) is a former Luxembourg cyclist.

Athletic career

He won his first victory at the age of 13 in a race of his home club CC Mondercange . Between 1991 and 1994 he won a total of 38 races in different age groups, including three national junior championships. His first appointment to the Luxembourg national team took place in July 1998. He started at the Tour of Slovakia and finished this tour in 11th place overall. In September he drove the Tour de l`Avenir and was there 25th in the classification, where he was able to win a stage.

Benoît Joachim began his professional career in 1999 with the US Postal Service Pro Cycling Team , which then went under the name Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team . He was one of the team's most important “workhorses” and drove into the spotlight on the 2004 Tour of Spain . He was the first Luxembourger to pull on the leadership jersey and wore it for two days.

The highlight of the 2004 season was Joachim's win at the time trial championship in Luxembourg, his third win in five years. All in all, in the course of his sporting career, he was three times national champion in road racing and twice in time trial. In addition to his national titles, he was able to win as a professional driver (at the British Prudencial Tour), which u. a. this was because he had to regularly support his respective captains at stage races. In 2004, however, during the Tour of Spain he was the first Luxembourger to wear the leadership jersey for three days. Joachim drove the Tour de France in 2000 (92nd) and 2002 (89th). In 2004 he started at the Olympic Games in Athens and finished 26th in the time trial. In July 2009, he contested his last race as a professional driver on the occasion of the Gala Tour de France in Luxembourg, after which he ended his career.

doping

In 2001, an increased nandrolone level was found in Joachim . He was suspended from his team. The B sample also confirmed the doping, but because of sloppiness in the evaluation of the B sample, the result could not be recognized. Joachim was allowed to drive with his team again.

In 2012, Joachim, who drove in the same teams as Lance Armstrong from 1999 to 2005 , stated in an interview that there had been no systematic doping in the United States Postal Service and Discovery Channel teams . He himself did not work with Michele Ferrari , which he regrets.
