The Democratic Party ( German  Democratic Party , French Parti démocratique ), or DP for short , is a liberal party in Luxembourg . After major gains in the 2013 chamber elections , she is the second Prime Minister of Luxembourg with Xavier Bettel . At the European level, it is a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE).

history

Since it was founded, the DP has been one of the three dominant parties in Luxembourg together with the Chrëschtlech Sozial Vollekspartei (CSV) and the Lëtzebuerger Sozialistesch Arbechterpartei (LSAP). Besides the CSV, the DP is the only party that was able to provide the Luxembourg Prime Minister after the Second World War , from 1974 to 1979 with Gaston Thorn and since 2013 with Xavier Bettel . In the remaining legislative periods, the DP was, alternately with the LSAP, merely a coalition partner of a government led by the CSV.

From 1999 to 2004, the DP was the second largest party in the Luxembourg parliament with 15 out of 60 seats and formed a coalition with the CSV. In the 2004 parliamentary elections, however, the party lost five seats, whereupon the CSV entered into a coalition with the now stronger LSAP. In the 2009 elections she again lost one seat to nine members in parliament. Under her new chairman, Xavier Bettel , the mayor of the capital, she was able to catch up with the Social Democrats with 13 seats in the 2013 chamber election . The party leadership of the Democrats then spoke out in favor of a coalition with the LSAP and the Greens .

In the European Parliament she is represented by two deputies since of 2019. The DP is a member of the European party Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), whose MEPs belong to the Renew Europe group.
