Colette Flesch (born April 16, 1937 in Dudelange ) is a Luxembourg politician of the Democratic Party and former fencer .

Professional and sporting career

Flesch completed a degree in economics and political science in the USA . She then worked from 1964 to 1969 as an administrator in the Secretariat of the Council of the European Communities (EC).

During her studies and work, she was also an active athlete and took part as a fencer in the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome , 1964 in Tokyo and 1968 in Mexico City . In 1967 she was elected Luxembourg Sportswoman of the Year .

Political career

MP, party leader and mayor

Colette Flesch began her political career in 1969 when she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies ( Chambre des députés ). There she initially represented the Democratic Party (DP) until 1980 and later again from 1984 to 1990 . From 1977 to 1980 she was its general secretary and from 1980 to 1989 President of the DP. From 1985 to 1990 she also assumed the office of President of the European Liberal, Democratic and Reform Party (ELDR).

Since June 13, 2004 she has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies again and a member of several committees there.

In 1970 she was also elected Mayor of Luxembourg City. She held this office until 1980.

Minister

From November 22, 1980 to July 20, 1984 she was Deputy Prime Minister in the cabinet of Pierre Werner . At the same time, she was also Minister for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Cooperation, Economy, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Justice. In the role of Foreign Minister in the second half of 1980, she was also the first woman President of the Council of the European Union . In the same ministerial office she also had to do with the turbulence when, on February 19, 1982, contrary to all agreements, Belgium unannounced and unilaterally devalued the Belgian franc.

European politician

As a member of parliament she also represented Luxembourg's interests in the European Parliament from 1969 to 1980 . After leaving the Chamber of Deputies, she became Director General for Culture, Information and the Translation Service of the European Commission in 1990 .

She was then again a member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2004 .

2004 until today

In 2004 Colette Flesch was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies. Among other things, she was Vice-President of the Committee on Economics, Energy, Post and Sport and the Committee on Higher Education, Research and Culture. Furthermore, she sat in the parliamentary office and the justice commission.

In 2005 the politician was also elected to the City Council of Luxembourg City, and is among other things cultural alderman. In January 2008 she resigned and left the position to Lydie Polfer .

In 2009 Colette Flesch was no longer elected to parliament and withdrew from active politics.

Other engagement

From 1992 to 1998 she was a member of the board of trustees of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation .
