Eugène Schaus
Eugène Schaus (born May 12, 1901 in Gonderange , † March 29, 1978 in Luxembourg ) was a Luxembourg politician and long-time minister.
Family and work as a legal scholar
The son of a teacher was the grandfather of the international director of the Louis Vuitton fashion company , Philippe Schaus .
The law graduate has published numerous articles on issues relating to the European Union as well as national and international law. In addition, he was President of the Luxembourg and Diekirch Bar Association from 1952 to 1954 and lecturer in law at the University of Nancy .
Political career
Party founder and MP
Schaus was originally a member of the Groupement Patriotique et Démocratique , of which he became president in 1952. On April 24, 1955, Schaus was one of the co-founders and first chairman of the Democratic Party (DP) until 1959 . For many years, Schaus was a member of the Chamber of Deputies ( Chambre des Députés ) and at times Vice-President of Parliament.
minister
On November 14, 1945 he was first appointed minister by Prime Minister Pierre Dupong . In his cabinet he held the office of Minister of the Interior until July 3, 1951. In this office he was replaced by the future Prime Minister Pierre Frieden . On March 1, 1947, he also took over the office of Minister of Justice.
From July 2, 1959 to July 15, 1964, he was Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Defense and Foreign Trade Minister in the first cabinet of Pierre Werner .
From February 6, 1969 to June 15, 1974 he was again Deputy Prime Minister and at the same time Minister of Defense, Interior and Justice in Werner's third cabinet.
As a minister, he campaigned for numerous reforms of Luxembourg law, such as equal rights for women, the organization of the armed forces and divorce and adoption law.
European activities
In addition to the government offices in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg , he was President of the Council of the European Communities in the first half of 1960 and in the first half of 1963 . Later he was a member of the European Parliament .
