Lydie Polfer (born November 22, 1952 in Luxembourg ) is a Luxembourg politician of the Democratic Party and mayor of Luxembourg City.

Life

After finishing school at the Robert Schuman High School in Luxembourg in 1972, she studied law and in 1976 passed a state examination in law at the University of Grenoble . In 1977 she obtained an additional diploma in European integration at the University Institute for European and International Studies in Grenoble . In the same year she was registered as a lawyer in Luxembourg.

Lydie Polfer is the daughter of the former Mayor of Luxembourg City, Camille Polfer (1980–1981), and is married to the Luxembourg Ambassador to the United Nations , Hubert Wurth . The couple has a daughter.

politics

In 1979 she became a member of the Democratic Party for the first time and received the mandate in subsequent elections up to and including 1999. From 1982 to 1999 she was mayor of Luxembourg City.

From 1984 with interruptions until 1994 she was a member of the European Parliament . After the 2004 elections and the departure of the DP from the government, she was again a member of the European Parliament.

From 1994 to 2004 she was chairman of the Democratic Party. From 1999 to 2004 she was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in the cabinet of Jean-Claude Juncker .

In January 2008, after Colette Flesch's resignation, she became a lay judge in Luxembourg City. Lydie Polfer has been Mayor of Luxembourg City again since December 2013, as her predecessor Xavier Bettel took over the post of Luxembourg Prime Minister.
