Life

Schneider studied business and finance at the ICHEC Brussels Management School , where he graduated in 1995. He had already joined the LSAP in 1991. From 1995 he sat for his party on the Kayl council . From 1997 to 2004 he was General Secretary of the LSAP Group in the Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies. In 2005 he was elected the mayor's first deputy after the municipal council elections, which he remained until 2010.

From 2012 to December 2013, Schneider was Minister of Economic Affairs in Luxembourg in the Juncker-Asselborn II government . In the 2013 parliamentary elections , he was the LSAP's top candidate. As a result, a coalition was formed between the Democratic Party (DP), the LSAP and the Luxembourg Greens under the leadership of Xavier Bettel (DP). In this government Schneider again took over the office of Minister of Economics and, for the first time, the office of Minister for Internal Security and Defense. He has also been Deputy Prime Minister since then.

In 2015 Etienne Schneider initiated the SpaceResources.lu initiative , which deals with the research and possible utilization of space resources . This also led to the creation of a Space Resources Act . As a further step, he founded the national space organization Luxembourg Space Agency in 2018 .

Politico Europe named Etienne Schneider in the list of the most important Europeans for 2018. In December 2017, the science and technology magazine SpaceNews named Etienne Schneider Government Leader of the Year for his commitment to space resources .

On December 23, 2019, Schneider announced his retirement from active politics. He will resign his offices in government on February 4, 2020 and also forego a possible return to the Chamber of Deputies . He did not rule out a move to the private sector, but first he would allow himself a break and take care of his private life. Schneider also assumed political responsibility for the poor performance of the LSAP in the 2018 chamber election and emphasized that it was time for a renewal of the party. His successor as deputy prime minister was Dan Kersch , Minister of Labor and Sports, and Franz Fayot, Member of the Chamber, as Minister of Economics .
