Franz Fayot
Franz Fayot (born February 28, 1972 in Luxembourg City ) is a Luxembourg lawyer and politician. He is a member of the Chamber of Deputies , the country's parliament, and has been party president and thus chairman of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) since the beginning of 2019 . He has been Luxembourg's Minister of Economic Affairs since February 4, 2020 .
Professional background
After graduating from school, Fayot studied law from 1991 : first for a year at the University of Luxembourg and then at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne , where he graduated in 1996. In the following year he settled in his hometown as a lawyer, his area of expertise is finance , business and insolvency law . From January 2002 Fayot was a partner in a large law firm . In order to have more time for his political activities, but also to be able to break new ground, he started his own business in March 2015 with a partner in a joint law firm.
politics
Fayot has been a member of the LSAP since 1994, and has been President of the local association in the state capital since 2013. In the election in October of the same year , he succeeded in entering the Chamber of Deputies for the first time in the Center electoral district. In the chamber election in October 2018 , the LSAP lost a seat in the Center constituency, which was at the expense of Fayot. Since Etienne Schneider again switched to the government bank as a minister , Fayot was able to move up to the Chamber on December 6, 2018 . There he heads the committee for economy and consumer protection and is deputy chairman of the committee for culture . For a long time, his political work has focused on financial policy as well as issues of urban development and social justice . For several years now, he has also been increasingly taking care of research and development , data protection and digitization .
At the beginning of 2018, Fayot, together with nine other members of the LSAP, sharply criticized the party leadership's previous policy in a paper. The group also called for greater say for the younger members and a sharpening of the party profile. On January 22, 2019, Fayot was elected the new president of the LSAP at a party congress in Käerjeng with 88 percent of the votes cast.
He has been Luxembourg's Minister of Economic Affairs since February 4, 2020 .
Private
Fayot comes from a family that was influenced by the LSAP: his father Ben was a member of the Chamber and the European Parliament for many years and was chairman of the party from 1985 to 1997. He lives in Luxembourg and has three children.
Fayot is a member of the board of directors of the Casemate Theater and the party-affiliated Robert Krieps Foundation. Fayot and Marc Limpach published a biography of Krieps in 2009 .
