Mike Zinzen

Mike Zinzen (* 1932 in Antwerp , † 6. August 2013 ) was a Belgian jazz - saxophonist and club owner.

Zinzen began playing the saxophone at the age of 17; As the leader of the band The Skylarks , he first played in the Dixieland style, before he switched to bebop after discovering Charlie Parker's music . In Antwerp he opened the Gard Sivik jazz club , which was followed by other foundings after a stay in Barcelona. In the era of free jazz he played music by Ornette Coleman with a trio , as well as his own compositions and free improvisations. At the end of the 1970s, he founded the Jazz Combine formation with tuba player and singer Patricia Beysens , with whom he made three LPs around 1980. Zinzen was also a soloist in the BRT Jazzorkest and was the program director of the Antwerp jazz club De Muze . With his quartet he recorded the album My Romance (Mercy Records), followed by Flashes and Crashes (1994), with Wout Hendriks, Henk de Laat and Kris Duerinckx. In 2009 the solo album Mike Zinzen was released solo .
