Xavier Bettel (born March 3, 1973 in Luxembourg ) is a Luxembourg politician of the Democratic Party . He has been Prime Minister of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg since December 4, 2013 . Bettel studied law and worked as a lawyer for a long time. In 1999 he became a member of the Chamber of Deputies , the Luxembourg Parliament. From 2011 to 2013, Bettel was Mayor of Luxembourg City . From 2013 to 2015 he was party leader of the Democratic Party.

Life

After graduating from the Lycée Hélène Boucher in the French city of Thionville (Diedenhofen), Xavier Bettel studied public law, church, maritime and European law at the law faculty of the University of Nancy in France and at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. Before he was elected mayor of Luxembourg, he worked as a lawyer alongside his political career.

Xavier Bettel was interested in politics at an early age, and so he joined the Democratic Party (DP) in 1988 at the age of 15. From 1994 to 2002 he was chairman of the Luxembourg Young Liberals (JDL).

In 1999, Bettel was elected to the Luxembourg Chamber of Deputies. At just 26 years old, he was the youngest member of parliament. Also in the same year he was elected to the municipal council of the Luxembourg capital. He was confirmed in office in the 2004 and 2009 parliamentary elections . At the municipal level, he became aldermen of the City of Luxembourg in 2005 . In the elections on October 9, 2011, Xavier Bettel was the most elected politician in his party. With that he ousted the incumbent mayor Paul Helminger. On November 24th, Xavier Bettel was sworn in as the new mayor of Luxembourg City.

In the 2013 national elections , Bettels DP won 13 seats. He refused to become a junior partner in a government led by longtime Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker . Instead, he agreed on coalition negotiations with the Social Democrats and the Greens. On October 25, 2013, Grand Duke Henri entrusted him with forming a government. On December 4, 2013, Bettel was sworn in as Prime Minister and his cabinet . After the parliamentary elections in 2018, Bettel (DP) was entrusted with the formation of the new government for the second time in October 2018. On December 3rd, Bettel's Democratic Party (DP) agreed with the Lëtzebuerger Sozialistesch Aarbechterpartei (LSAP) and the Greens ( Déi Gréng ) to continue the existing coalition.

Xavier Bettels homosexuality was a topic in the Luxembourg media several times. On June 28, 2008, he spoke openly about his homosexuality for the first time in the RTL broadcast Background . He emphasized how difficult it is still today to deal with this in Luxembourg society. From March 19, 2010, Xavier Bettel lived in a registered partnership with Gauthier Destenay, a Belgian architect; The couple married on May 15, 2015 in Luxembourg. After Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir, Bettel is the second homosexual head of government in Europe to get married in office. In February 2019, he attracted attention when he pointed out his homosexuality at a meeting with representatives of the Arab League and said that in most of those present’s home countries he would face imprisonment or the death penalty for it.

During Bettel's tenure, secret tax agreements between international corporations and Luxembourg authorities - the so-called " Luxembourg leaks " - were published .

Xavier Bettel was criticized in mid-September 2019 for what the British media and politicians called "public humiliation of Boris Johnson " after he planned a joint press conference during a Johnson visit within earshot of anti-Johnson demonstrators and a rescheduling of the conference to a refused another place. Johnson left while Bettel appeared alone at the press conference and was critical of the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union to the cheers of the demonstrators .
