Lambert Joseph Emmanuel Servais (born April 11, 1811 in Mersch , † June 17, 1890 in Bad Nauheim ) was a Luxembourg politician and writer.

Life

Emmanuel Servais studied law in Ghent , Paris and Liège from 1829 to 1833 and then settled in Arlon as a lawyer. During the time of the Belgian Revolution , Servais played an active role and was a member of the Provincial Council. During these years he founded the newspaper L'écho du Luxembourg .

In 1839 Servais returned to Mersch and enrolled as a lawyer in Luxembourg . Between 1841 and 1848 he was a member of the Assemblée des États and in 1848 became a representative in the Assemblée constituante . Servais represented Luxembourg in the Frankfurt National Assembly from May 20, 1848 to May 30, 1849 .

From 1853 to 1857 he was Director General (Minister) for Finance in the government of Charles-Mathias Simons . Servais was a member of the State Council between 1857 and 1867 . In 1867 he became Minister of State and President of the Government. On December 26, 1874, he surprisingly announced his resignation. Servais was President of the Council of State until 1887 and Mayor of Luxembourg City from 1875 to 1890 .

Emmanuel Servais helped draft a total of four Luxembourg constitutions: those of 1841, 1848, 1856 and 1868. He was also, together with Victor de Tornaco, a signatory to the second London Treaty of May 11, 1867. See also: Luxembourg crisis

After his political career, Servais also made a name for himself as a writer.
