Jacques Santer (born May 18, 1937 in Wasserbillig ) is a Luxembourg politician of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) and Honorary Minister of State of Luxembourg.

Luxembourgish politics

During a government reshuffle on September 19, 1972, Jacques Santer was appointed State Secretary in the Werner-Schaus II government. This was replaced by the Thorn-Vouel-Berg government on June 15, 1974 after the 1974 chamber election . Santer became party leader of the CSV in 1974 and held this office until 1982. After the 1979 chamber election , the Werner-Thorn-Flesch government was constituted on July 16, 1979 ; Santer became Minister of Finance, Labor and Social Affairs. After the 1984 election of the Chamber , the government of Santer-Poos I was in office from July 20, 1984 to July 14, 1989 ; Santer was Prime Minister , Minister of Finance and Minister of State. The Santer-Poos II government was in office until July 13, 1994 . Santer was Prime Minister, Minister of Culture (until January 1995) and Minister of State. After the chamber election in 1994 , the coalition of CSV and LSAP that had existed since 1984 was continued; Santer remained Prime Minister. When Santer became President of the European Commission in January 1995 , Jean-Claude Juncker succeeded him as Prime Minister.

International offices

He was also a member of the Board of Governors of the World Bank from 1984 to 1989 and governor of the International Monetary Fund from 1991 to 1994 .

Offices in the European Union

Santer became President of the European Commission on January 23, 1995 . A report on corruption cases that affected some EU commissioners led to the resignation of the entire Santer Commission , which had actually been appointed until September, on March 15, 1999 , followed by the Marín Commission .

From 1975 to 1979 he was a member of the European Parliament and also Vice-President. In 1999 he became a member of the European Parliament again and in 2002 a member of the European Convention . He held both until 2004, since then he has been a member of the Board of Directors of RTL Group .

Since May 2013 Santer has been Honorary President of SME Europe , the official economic wing of the European People's Party .
