The canton of Echternach is located in the east of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg . It borders in the north and east on the German state Rhineland-Palatinate , in the south on the canton Grevenmacher and in the west on the cantons Mersch and Diekirch .

Until the abolition of the Luxembourg districts on October 3, 2015, the canton belonged to the Grevenmacher district .
